Samsung Schedules October 24th NYC Event, Expect The Galaxy Note II To Finally Launch In The US

Samsung Schedules October 24th NYC Event, Expect The Galaxy Note II To Finally Launch In The US: samsung
Get ready for another Samsung mobile launch. The Korean electronic giant just sent out invites for an October 24th NYC event. And judging by the prominent S-Pen graphic, the Samsung Galaxy Note II is likely the topic.
Giant phone lovers, rejoice. Samsung’s latest is about to hit the states.
The Next Big Thing Is Here, says the invite. And while that’s sort of confusing, since, you know, the Galaxy Note II is actually not here yet. It soon will be. Per an earlier report, the phablet is scheduled launch on the top five US wireless carriers by mid-November. That’s just weeks after this press event, likely signalling the Galaxy Note II should be available for preorder as soon as its announced for the US market.
The 5.5-inch phone/tablet is expected to cost between $249 and $299 with a two-year wireless contract. It utilizes a Super AMOLED screen compatible with Samsung redesigned S-Pen.

Box app updated with iPhone 5 compatibility, get 10 GB of storage free now

Box app updated with iPhone 5 compatibility, get 10 GB of storage free now:
The Box app has just been updated for compatibility with the iPhone 5 and to celebrate, Box is offering some excellent cloud storage deals for new users. When you download and sign in to the free app (starting now, for a limited time), you will get the 10 GB + Sync Box service for free. If you are a new user, that's yours for free, and if you're an existing user with a 5 GB account, you'll get another 5 GB for free as well.
Box not only allows you to save you files on its cloud service, but also lets you make use of the Box API, with lots of different services for various document types and apps. And Box Sync allows you to connect all your documents up together to your desktop computers, so you can access and use them from anywhere. Currently, I use Dropbox quite a bit, but that free service only offers 2 GB of storage, so Box's deal is worth jumping on right now. It's available until October 31, so download the app and sign up as soon as you can.

Facebook SDK 3.1 for iOS available to developers

Facebook SDK 3.1 for iOS available to developers:
Attention all you iOS devs, Facebook has just released its Facebook SDK 3.1 for iOS. Among other things, the SDK allows developers to easily code their apps to allow single sign-on through Facebook IDs. This means that if your app allows users to sign into it via their Facebook account, you no longer have to ask them to enter their Facebook email address and password. One tap in iOS 6 and the user can instantly log in without having to type out a whole bunch of characters on the keyboard.
In addition to Facebook login, the SDK adds a whole bunch of other great features including:

  • Native, ready-to-use UI controls: The SDK includes several pre-built user interface controls.

  • Friend Picker to help apps easily pick friends. Example: use a friend picker to choose friends to tag in an Open Graph action.

  • Places Picker so apps can easily integrate with Facebook places. Example: use this picker to let users include a place with their posts.

  • Profile Picture control so your app can easily show the profile picture of a user, their friends, places, or other kinds of Facebook objects.

  • Login controls for easily building Login and Logout experiences.
Developers can download the SDK here.

RIM puts BlackBerry 10 on display: new alarm, Peek gesture and more

RIM puts BlackBerry 10 on display: new alarm, Peek gesture and more:
At today's RIM event, the BlackBerry maker gave us a closer look at BB10, with CEO Thorsten Heins talking up the operating system as "all about getting things done" and coining the interface "BlackBerry Flow." He demoed a new Peek feature that lets users access the message notifications screen with a right angle gesture. The function can be used in any app: performing the swipe takes users to the BlackBerry Hub where they can view Tweets, messages and other notifications. There's also a new clock and alarm system, which works by the user holding their fingertip on the bezel and sliding it to the appropriate time to set an alarm.
There's also the business-friendly Balance feature we already knew about, which will let users' IT departments access corporate email and perform remote wipe without affecting the rest of the phone. With Balance, BlackBerry phones essentially have two profiles, one secured for the work environment and one for personal use. It just so happens that we already got a hands-on look at the software running on a Dev Alpha B handset: take a look here.

Google patent delivers close-up photos when your phone can't, Blade Runners would approve

Google patent delivers closeup photos when your phone can't, Blade Runners would approve
It's been 30 years since we saw Deckard track down replicants by having a machine "enhance" pictures, and yet we're still stuck with distant-looking photos when we want more detail than our smartphone cameras can manage. While we'd argue that a few phones already live in that Blade Runner future, Google has just obtained a patent that could give the rest of us a helping hand. If the zoom isn't up to snuff, the proposed software could gauge a mobile device's position and orientation to offer a closer, already-taken photo from a server as a substitute, whether it's a Street View shot or a more traditional image. The geocoded system could even cue photos based on the time of day and year to provide that extra dash of authenticity. We already get a trace of the concept through photo overlays within Street View itself, although there's no indication as to whether or not Google will link our camera apps directly to a cloud of substitute photos -- suffice it to say that the industry has changed a lot since Google was using the iPhone 3G to illustrate its photography concepts.

Daily iPhone App: Sword of Fargoal is great, goes free

Daily iPhone App: Sword of Fargoal is great, goes free:
Sword of Fargoal is an older title from the App Store -- it was introduced quite a while back as a graphical roguelike RPG, in that you run around a randomly generated dungeon while collecting gold and beating down anything in your way. The game actually started back in the early '80s, but came to the iPhone early on, and has since been updated a lot in terms of graphics, gameplay elements and just general stability. At this point, it's a really well-polished, well-traveled action RPG game. And right now, it's absolutely free, so you should grab it for your iPhone for sure.
The reason it's free is because the developers of the game are working on a sequel (that we got to see at Macworld at the beginning of last year) that's currently trying to pick up $50,000 in funding on Kickstarter. Sword of Fargoal 2 is a much bigger and better sequel, and the devs are looking to raise some money to help them make it. Unfortunately, it's going to be a tough road, as they've only raised about $14,000 with a few weeks to go, but the plan here is to make Sword of Fargoal free, and hope that raises awareness (and interest) in funding Sword of Fargoal 2.
I don't know if they'll make the goal itself ($50,000 is a lot to ask for an iOS game, in my humble opinion), but I can tell you that the original title is excellent, and a great bargain at the low price of free. Definitely pick it up while you can, and do fund the sequel if you think it's worth supporting.
